Must have durable toys for your large dog

It can be hard and expensive to find durable toys for your dog. I know this from experience. Since getting Jake, our Lab and Great Dane pup, I have spent a lot of money on toys that sometimes only last a few hours. What makes finding toys hard for us is that they don’t last. Jake can rip through just about anything. He loves the plush toys with a squeaky but they only last about one hour in our house, before the squeaky is dead and the stuffing is all over the house.

Here are a few of my favorite toys that have worked well for Jake and have lasted quite some time.

1. The classic KONG

The classic Kong dog toy is the toy that Jake has had the longest. This is his go to toy. We like to fill Jake’s Kong up with peanut butter and Wet Noses Organic Dog Treats.

2. The Jolly Ball

Jake’s favorite back yard toy. My husband and Jake love to play soccer with this ball and it is the only large ball that Jake has not destroyed.

3. KONG Jumbler Football

Caution: I can only take this toy is small doses. It does squeak and boy does Jake love it. The only squeaky toy I have found that has lasted more than an hour with him.

I hope this helps on you quest to find toys that will stand the test of time with your dog. I am always on the look out for durable toys for Jake, so leave a comment and let me know what indestructible toys you have found!

Frozen yogurt for your pup

The weather is warming up and it is time to think of ways to keep my pup cool. One thing that he loves is home made frozen yogurts. Here is how I do it.

I like to use natural things that I have in my garden or things I already have in my pantry. This can be hard at times, with all of my dog’s allergies.  What I made up for him tonight is peanut butter and blueberry frozen yogurt. YUM!!

Yummy frozen yogurt for you pup!

Here is my recipe.

  • 1 cup Greek Yogurt
  • ¼ cup peanut butter
  • Handful of fresh or frozen blueberries

I put it all in a food processor until it is blended together. I then put the mixture it paper cupcake cups and place them in the freezer.

For me this makes 6 frozen yogurt cups.

I sometimes change the recipe by using apple sauce in place of peanut butter.

I hope your pup enjoys this as much as mine does!

Jake Dog Update

It has been some time since I have written anything about Jake. We have had him for about a year and it has been some journey. In my last post I wrote that Jake was on a high protein, gluten free diet. This was true then and is still true now, just not the same protein.

Tired of having to put him on expensive, short term medications and seeing him in pain, shortly after that post we had Jake’s vet administer an allergy test. The vet and I decided an allergy test would be well worth it.

It turns out Jake is allergic to almost everything! This is not a joke. The vet said it was one of the worst she had seen. He has both food and environmental allergies. There was not much I could do about the environmental allergies, unless I put him in a bubble, so it was on to conquering his food allergies.

On the night we found this out, my husband and I spent all night searching for food. He is allergic to rice, peas, wheat and many proteins. Turns out, all the doggy kibble we looked at had rice, peas or wheat in it. I found a roll of food by Freshpet Vital, that he could eat for a day or two until I could find him kibble. Man did he love the Freshpet Vital roll.

Jake gets his new food. Not very excited about it.

With his vet’s help, we finally found a kibble that he is not allergic to. It is made out of Kangaroo! It has to be shipped to our home. Jake did not love it at first, but it has grown on him.

We also put him on custom made allergy shots. This is the only thing I could think of that would help him with his environmental allergies.

Yesterday I took Jake to the Vet for a checkup. He is doing great! The vet said this is the best she has seen him. I was so happy. It looks like all of this time and money has paid off. He is looking good and feeling so much better. He will have to say on his allergy shots and still has a very strike diet. He is so happy and so are we.
